The largest solar project at VACAR is the 16 MW Davidson Solar Facility, developed by SunEdison LLC. North Carolina is the second-largest solar generator in the nation, with more than 1,000 megawatts installed last year alone, 37% of which in South Carolina, according to the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). Tesla controllers will control the distribution of power in the micro-grid when grid conditions change, using the Tesla Powerwall and Tesla Model S electric vehicles.

Access to cheap batteries and solar panels has prompted places like New York and Chicago to build micro-grids that can power entire communities. Instead of waiting in a queue again, they can now power their homes without having to wait in the line of interconnection.
The Outer Banks is, as its name suggests, on a barrier island between North Carolina and Virginia, but it is a real city, and the Microgrid project was launched.
